Claude Tool / Connector Showing "Unavailable"

A previously-working tool greys out — workspace admin policy, plan, or temporary outage.

Yesterday you used Web Search, Computer Use, or some Connector in Claude. Today it’s greyed out, won’t click, or shows “unavailable in your workspace.” You didn’t change a thing. “Worked yesterday, broken today” is almost never a Claude-wide outage (that would make headlines) — your workspace state changed: an admin tweaked policy in the console, your plan downgraded, or Anthropic toggled a feature off temporarily.

Triage order: check Anthropic status → check your plan → check workspace admin policy. Doing it backwards wastes hours.

Common causes

Ordered by hit rate, highest first.

1. Workspace admin disabled the tool

Team / Enterprise admins can disable Web Search, Computer Use, Connectors with one click. Common reasons: compliance audit (data egress), monthly cost control.

How to spot it: Ask another member of the same workspace if tool X works for them. If nobody can use it, it’s almost certainly admin-disabled.

2. Your plan no longer covers the tool

Computer Use, Extended Thinking, and certain enterprise-only Connectors require a higher tier. Downgrade Team → Pro, or end of trial, drops these tools.

How to spot it: Settings → Plan, then compare against Anthropic Pricing for which tier includes the tool.

3. Anthropic-side maintenance or incident

Specific tools (especially new ones) get temporarily taken down for fixes. status.anthropic.com will publish.

How to spot it: Status page shows “Partial outage: Tool name.”

4. Region restriction / data residency

Export-control rules or workspace-level region locks block some tools in certain countries. VPN switching regions can trigger it.

How to spot it: Error contains “not available in your region,” or switching network restores access.

5. Beta / preview feature not enabled for you

Some tools are Closed Beta / invite-only. You see others using it but your workspace isn’t in the cohort.

How to spot it: Tool card has a “Request access” button, or Anthropic blog flags it as Limited Preview.

6. Browser cache / stale app showing old tool list

Backend enabled it, but your frontend cache still shows the old list. Rare, but happens.

How to spot it: Hard refresh (Cmd+Shift+R) or different browser shows it.

Shortest path to fix

Step 1: Check status first

Visit https://status.anthropic.com
  → ongoing incidents?
→ past 24h history for this tool?

If yes, wait for the fix. Subscribe to updates so you’re notified.

Step 2: Plan self-check

Claude Settings → Account / Plan
  → current plan name
→ compare against https://www.anthropic.com/pricing for which tier
    includes the tool

If you need to upgrade, test on a trial of the higher tier before committing.

Step 3: Ask admin about policy

If you’re on a Team / Enterprise workspace, email the admin:

Subject: Tool "X" greyed out in our workspace

Hi [admin],

Tool "X" stopped working today in our Claude workspace.
Status page shows no incident. My plan covers X.
Could you check Admin Console → Settings → Tools / Permissions
to see if X was disabled recently?

If deliberate, can we discuss re-enabling? The workflow we use
X for: [brief description]

Step 4: Hard refresh + try another browser

Cmd+Shift+R (Mac) / Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows)
Or incognito window / different browser

If it was a stale frontend cache, it comes back.

Step 5: Request beta access

For Limited Preview tools, the tool card usually has a “Request access” button. Submit with your use case. Or email Anthropic sales if you’re on Enterprise.

Step 6: Stand up a fallback

While it’s broken, keep working:

Web Search down → Google manually, paste results
Connector down → file upload / copy-paste content
Computer Use down → screenshot + show to Claude

Note how long it’s been down so admin / support can correlate to logs.

Prevention

  • Document workflow-critical tools in Notion / wiki: tool → purpose → fallback
  • No critical workflow on a single tool — always have an alternate path
  • Subscribe to status.anthropic.com push notifications
  • On Team workspaces, get admin to announce tool changes — no silent toggles
  • New Anthropic features ship in beta first — don’t deeply integrate pre-GA features into critical workflows
  • Monthly review of which tools you use vs. your current plan, to catch silent downgrades
