Gemini on Android Not Replacing Assistant

Tap-and-hold power doesn't bring up Gemini on Android — toggle, app version, region.

Long-press power (Pixel) or home (other OEMs) is supposed to bring up Gemini, but you keep getting the old Google Assistant — or nothing at all. Google’s Assistant → Gemini migration (started 2024) hasn’t completed on your device. Common reasons: Gemini app not installed, not set as default assistant, region not rolled out, or an OEM skin intercepting the gesture.

To make Gemini own the assistant slot, verify app + default + region + Android version one at a time.

Common causes

By frequency:

1. Gemini app not installed or not set as default (most common)

Many users assume the Google app upgrade brings Gemini — Gemini is a separate app, needs separate install and explicit default-assistant assignment.

How to judge:

Play Store → search "Gemini" → installed?
Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app

If the digital-assistant slot is still Google Assistant, this is it.

2. Region not in rollout

Gemini’s assistant feature rolls out by region. As of 2026 most countries have it, but some (Russia, Iran, North Korea, parts of Africa) still don’t.

How to judge:

  • Play Store search for Gemini shows “App not compatible” / “Not available in your country” = this
  • Temporary VPN to US/UK lets it install = same root cause

3. Gemini app version too old

Old Gemini versions don’t have the assistant-replacement code. Need v1.0.700+.

How to judge: Play Store → Gemini → version number; < 1.0.700 = update.

4. OEM skin intercepts the gesture

Some Xiaomi MIUI / Huawei EMUI / Samsung One UI versions hijack the gesture with their own assistant. E.g. Samsung Bixby’s power-key setting overrides Gemini.

How to judge: long-press brings up Bixby / Xiao’ai / Celia instead of either Google Assistant or Gemini — this is it.

5. Android version too low

Gemini’s Android assistant requires Android 10+.

How to judge: Settings → About phone → Android version.

6. Workspace / education / child account restrictions

Restricted account types can’t use Gemini’s assistant feature by default:

  • Workspace if admin hasn’t enabled Gemini
  • Family Link child accounts under 13
  • Education accounts blocked by school IT

Shortest path to fix

Step 1: Install the Gemini app

Play Store → search "Gemini" → Install

If it says “not available”, go to Step 3.

Step 2: Set Gemini as default digital assistant

Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant app → Gemini

Path differs per OEM:

  • Pixel / Stock Android: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant
  • Samsung: Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Digital assistant app
  • Xiaomi MIUI: Settings → App settings → Default apps → Digital assistant
  • Huawei EMUI: Settings → Apps → Default apps → Assistant app

Long-press power / home immediately to verify.

Step 3: Region unavailable — VPN + change Play Store region

1. Install ProtonVPN / NordVPN, connect to US / UK
2. Play Store → Settings → General → Account and device preferences → Country/Region
3. Switch to a supported region (needs a valid credit card in that region)
4. Restart Play Store
5. Search Gemini → Install

Play Store country can only change once per year.

Step 4: Update Gemini and Google apps

Both apps need updates:

Play Store → My apps → check Gemini, Google App, Google Play Services
→ Update all to latest

Reboot after updating.

Step 5: OEM skin — disable the manufacturer’s assistant

By brand:

Samsung Bixby:

Long-press power → tap the gear when Bixby appears
Turn off "Press and hold to wake Bixby"
Then Settings → Apps → Default apps → Digital assistant → Gemini

Xiaomi Xiao’ai:

Settings → Smart assistant → Turn off "Wake Xiao'ai with power button"
Settings → App settings → Default apps → Digital assistant → Gemini

Huawei Celia:

Settings → Smart assistant → Turn off gestures
Settings → Apps → Default apps → Assistant → Gemini

Step 6: Upgrade Android

If Android < 10:

  • Pixel: Settings → System → System update
  • Other OEMs: follow manufacturer instructions

If the device can’t go to Android 10+, the device can’t run Gemini assistant.

Step 7: Check account restrictions

  • Workspace: contact IT admin; Admin Console → Apps → Additional Google services → Gemini app for Workspace → enable
  • Child account: parent enables Gemini in Family Link
  • Education: contact school IT

Step 8: Clear cache and re-activate

If everything above is in place:

Settings → Apps → Gemini → Storage → Clear data
Reboot phone
Long-press power to activate Gemini and run through setup

Prevention

  • Keep both Gemini and Google App on auto-update
  • On OEM skins, disable the native assistant before setting Gemini as default
  • If region is unavailable, permanently switch Play Store region rather than toggling
  • For Workspace accounts, confirm with IT that Gemini is enabled
  • Minimum device: Android 10+ and Gemini app v1.0.700+
