Same Google account, but the mobile Gemini app and gemini.google.com on your laptop show different conversation lists. This is almost always one of four things, in order of likelihood: the two surfaces are signed into different Google accounts, the 2026 web/app sync-overwrite bug, Keep Activity (formerly “Gemini Apps Activity”) is off, or Workspace admin policy isolating managed devices. It is rarely sync lag.
Fastest fix: open the avatar on both surfaces and confirm the signed-in email matches character-for-character (including any work-account suffix). A mismatch there is the cause about half the time and costs 20 seconds to rule out. If accounts match, check the sync-overwrite bug below.
Gemini stores conversation history per account, and within an account it is gated by your activity setting and Workspace policy. Any mismatch in those dimensions makes one side’s chats invisible on the other.
Common causes
By frequency:
1. App and Web signed into different Google accounts (most common)
On Android the Gemini app often defaults to the phone’s primary (personal) account, while Chrome on the laptop is signed into a Workspace work account. The two histories are completely separate.
How to judge:
- App: tap your avatar (top-right), read the signed-in email
- Web: tap your avatar (top-right at
gemini.google.com), read the signed-in email
Mismatched emails = this is it.
2. The 2026 web/app sync-overwrite bug
A genuine bug confirmed in the Gemini Apps Community through the first half of 2026: when you continue one conversation thread on both surfaces, the newer surface can overwrite the thread, making earlier turns vanish from the other side. Start a chat on the web, keep typing in the app, and the web copy of that thread may show only the app’s turns (or go blank). It most often surfaces on accounts where browser profiles are shared between multiple Google accounts.
How to judge: the messages are missing from the live thread on one surface, but the same prompts are still listed at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. Your data is not lost; it is just not rendering in that thread.
This one is not user-fixable in the live thread. The fix is to stop interleaving the same thread across surfaces (see Prevention) and to file feedback so Google’s engineers can match the report (see Step 9).
3. Workspace policy hides conversations on unmanaged devices
If your Workspace admin restricts Gemini to managed devices or has conversation history off for your OU:
- Work laptop signed into Workspace shows full history
- Home Mac browser signed into the same account shows nothing (not MDM-enrolled)
- Phone app on the same account also shows nothing
How to judge: does the same work account behave differently on company vs personal devices? That points to admin policy, not a Gemini bug.
4. Keep Activity (formerly “Gemini Apps Activity”) is off
Gemini history depends on the Keep Activity toggle (Google renamed “Gemini Apps Activity” to “Keep Activity” in early 2026). If it is off, only a 72-hour copy is kept for safety/processing and nothing shows in your saved history list.
How to judge: open myactivity.google.com/product/gemini or gemini.google.com → Settings → Activity and check whether Keep Activity is on.
5. Temporary Chat (formerly “private” / “incognito”)
Gemini’s Temporary Chat mode (launched 2025, the replacement for the old “private” label) is not saved to history, not synced across surfaces, and not used for personalization. Temporary chats are retained for at most 72 hours.
How to judge: the missing conversation showed a “Temporary chat” header (no greeting, a privacy notice) in the app. By design it never reaches the web.
6. Cache sync delay (rare)
After an app restart it can take 1-2 minutes to pull new conversations. Beyond about 5 minutes it is no longer a delay; treat it as one of the causes above.
7. Region routing differences
After a VPN region switch, Gemini may route to a different data center and briefly fail to show recent conversations.
Which bucket are you in?
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Different email on app vs web avatar | Different accounts | Step 1 |
| Same account, turns vanished from a thread you used on both | Sync-overwrite bug | Step 2 + Step 9 |
| Same account, work account differs by device | Workspace policy | Step 4 |
| Nothing saves anywhere, even on one surface | Keep Activity off | Step 3 |
| Chat had a “Temporary chat” header | Temporary Chat (by design) | Step 5 |
| Brand-new chat missing for a minute or two | Cache lag | Step 6 |
| Started right after a VPN switch | Region routing | Step 7 |
Shortest path to fix
Step 1: Verify both sides are on the exact same account
The critical step:
App: tap top-right avatar → email shown
Web: tap top-right avatar → email shown
Both must match character-for-character (including any work-domain suffix). Mismatch means switch to the same account.
Switch account in the app:
Gemini app → avatar → Add account / Switch account
Step 2: Rule out the sync-overwrite bug
If accounts match and turns disappeared from a thread you touched on both surfaces, confirm the data still exists before doing anything destructive:
myactivity.google.com/product/gemini
→ search for a unique phrase from the missing turn
If the prompts are listed there, the data is safe; the live thread just will not re-render them. Do not delete or recreate the thread. Stop interleaving that thread across app and web, and file feedback (Step 9).
Step 3: Confirm Keep Activity is on
gemini.google.com → Settings → Activity
(or myactivity.google.com/product/gemini)
→ "Keep Activity" toggle = ON
→ Auto-delete is not set to a window that already passed
As of June 2026 the default retention for personal accounts is 18 months. If Keep Activity was off, turning it on saves only future conversations; past ones outside the 72-hour buffer are gone.
Step 4: Managed device / Workspace policy
For work or school accounts:
- Contact your IT admin.
- Have them check Admin console → Menu → Generative AI → Gemini app → Gemini conversation history:
- Is “Enable Gemini conversation history” checked for your OU?
- Is the auto-delete window (3 months / 18 months / 3 years) cutting off old chats?
- If policy restricts unmanaged devices, enroll the personal device in MDM or use a company device.
Note: as of the June 2026 admin rollout, admins can also disable Temporary chats and conversation deletion at the domain/OU/group level, so behavior can differ between your work and personal accounts.
Step 5: Check whether it was a Temporary Chat
In the app, look for a “Temporary chat” header on the conversation. By design those never sync and are kept at most 72 hours. They are not recoverable on the web.
Do not use Temporary Chat for conversations you will want to find later.
Step 6: Force an app re-sync
1. Gemini app → avatar → sign out
2. Restart the app
3. Sign back in
4. Wait 1-2 min for history to load
If it still will not sync, clear cache (NOT data, which wipes local state):
Android: Settings → Apps → Gemini → Storage → Clear cache
Step 7: Browser-side diagnostics
On the web:
- Sign out of Google, close all Google tabs, restart the browser.
- Test the same account in a private/incognito window to rule out browser cache.
- Multi-account session in Chrome? The account switcher can pick the wrong one. Check the URL:
gemini.google.com/u/0/vs/u/1/map to different accounts. Set the one you want asu/0and bookmark it.
Step 8: Region consistency
If one side uses a VPN:
- Turn it off.
- Put both sides on the same physical region.
- Wait about 5 minutes for sync.
Step 9: Send feedback (for the sync-overwrite bug)
If the data is safe in My Activity but a live thread is broken, the official escalation path puts your report in front of Google’s engineers:
Gemini app or web → Help & feedback → Send feedback
→ keep the "System logs" box checked
→ describe both surfaces and the missing thread
The system logs give the team the diagnostics they need to match your account state to the bug.
How to confirm it’s fixed
- Open the same conversation by title on both app and web and confirm the latest turns match.
- Start a fresh chat on the web, send one message, then open the app within ~2 minutes; the new chat should appear at the top of recents.
- The signed-in email on both avatars is identical and Keep Activity reads ON.
FAQ
Are my missing Gemini conversations gone for good?
Usually not. Saved conversations live in your Google account; check myactivity.google.com/product/gemini. If a prompt shows there, the data exists even when a live thread fails to render it. The exceptions are Temporary Chats and anything sent while Keep Activity was off, both of which are kept for at most 72 hours.
Why do new messages disappear from the web after I reply in the app? That is the 2026 sync-overwrite bug: editing one thread on both surfaces can make the newer surface overwrite the older turns. Avoid continuing the same thread on both app and web at once, and file feedback with system logs (Step 9).
Where did “Gemini Apps Activity” go in my settings?
Google renamed it to “Keep Activity” in early 2026. It is under gemini.google.com → Settings → Activity or at myactivity.google.com/product/gemini.
My work Gemini shows history on my office laptop but nothing at home. Why? Almost certainly a Workspace admin policy that limits Gemini history to managed devices, or conversation history disabled for your OU. Only your admin can change it (Admin console → Generative AI → Gemini app).
Does signing out and back in delete my chats? No. Sign-out and a cache clear (not a data clear) only refresh the local copy; your saved history re-downloads from your account on the next sign-in.
Prevention
- Use one primary Google account for AI work; avoid mixing personal and work.
- Do not continue the same thread on both app and web at the same time (avoids the sync-overwrite bug).
- Do not use Temporary Chat for conversations you want to keep.
- Keep “Keep Activity” enabled and set an auto-delete window you are comfortable with.
- Document which device uses which account so you do not lose conversations to the wrong surface.
