Gemini App vs Web Show Different Conversations

Same account, different chat lists across surfaces — Workspace, region, and pinned device profiles explain most of it.

Same Google account, but the mobile Gemini app and gemini.google.com on your laptop show different conversation lists — almost always account mismatch, Workspace policy, or platform / managed-device differences. Not sync lag. Gemini stores conversations across three dimensions: account + platform + managed status. Any mismatch in those dimensions makes the other side invisible.

To get the two surfaces back in sync, lock down account consistency first, then rule out Workspace / managed-device isolation.

Common causes

By frequency:

1. App and Web signed into different Google accounts (most common)

On Android the Gemini app often defaults to the phone’s primary account (personal); Chrome on the laptop is signed into a Workspace work account. Their histories are completely separate.

How to judge:

  • App: tap avatar, see signed-in email
  • Web: top-right avatar, see signed-in email

Mismatched = this is it.

2. Platform-exclusive features

Some features only exist on one platform:

  • Gemini Live (real-time conversation): only on Android / iOS apps, no Web
  • Image generation: Web entry vs different app entry
  • Pixel Recorder integration: Pixel only
  • Deep Research: prominent on Web, buried in app menus

How to judge: was the “missing” conversation started using a feature only on one surface?

3. Workspace policy hides conversations on unmanaged devices

If your Workspace admin set “show conversations only on managed devices”:

  • Work laptop signed into Workspace shows full history
  • Home Mac browser signed into the same account shows nothing (not MDM-enrolled)
  • Phone app same account also invisible

How to judge: does the same work account behave differently on company vs personal devices?

4. Activity History turned off

Gemini history depends on “Gemini Apps Activity” toggle. If off, conversations aren’t saved — gone on next visit.

How to judge: myactivity.google.com/product/gemini — is “Gemini Apps Activity” on?

5. Private mode / one-time conversation

The app’s “private” / “incognito” conversation mode doesn’t sync to Web.

How to judge: does the missing conversation have a private / incognito badge in the app?

6. Cache sync delay (rare)

After app restart it can take 1-2 minutes to pull new conversations. > 5 minutes is no longer a delay.

7. Region routing differences

After VPN switching, Gemini may route to a different data center, briefly making conversations invisible.

Shortest path to fix

Step 1: Verify both sides on the exact same account

The critical step:

App: tap top-right avatar → email shown
Web: tap top-right avatar → email shown

Both must match character-for-character (including any .work.com suffix). Mismatch → switch to the same account.

Switching account in the app:

Gemini app → avatar → Add account / Switch account

Step 2: Confirm Gemini Apps Activity is on

myactivity.google.com/product/gemini
→ "Gemini Apps Activity" toggle to ON
→ Retention setting != "Don't save"

Off historically? Turning it on only saves future conversations; past ones are gone.

Step 3: Managed device / Workspace policy

For work accounts:

  1. Contact your IT admin
  2. Have them check Admin Console → Apps → Additional Google services → Gemini app for Workspace:
    • “Allow users to use Gemini on unmanaged devices” enabled?
    • “Gemini Apps Activity” enabled by default?
  3. If policy restricts unmanaged devices: enroll the personal device in MDM, or use a company device

Step 4: Check if it’s a private conversation

In the app, look for a “private” / “incognito” badge on the conversation. By design those don’t sync — not recoverable.

Don’t use private mode for conversations you’ll want to find later.

Step 5: Force app re-sync

1. Gemini app → avatar → sign out
2. Restart the app
3. Sign back in
4. Wait 1-2 min for history to load

If still not syncing, clear cache (NOT data, which deletes local state):

Settings → Apps → Gemini → Storage → Clear cache

Step 6: Browser-side diagnostics

Web:

  1. Sign out of Google → close all Google tabs → restart browser
  2. Test the same account in an incognito window to rule out cache
  3. Multi-account session in Chrome? The top account switcher may pick the wrong one. Check the URL: gemini.google.com/u/0/ vs /u/1/ correspond to different accounts

Step 7: Region consistency

If one side uses VPN:

  1. Turn it off
  2. Both sides on the same physical region
  3. Wait 5 minutes for sync

Prevention

  • Use one primary Google account for AI work; avoid mixing personal and work
  • Don’t mix Workspace managed-device conversations with “I want this everywhere” expectations
  • Don’t use private / one-time mode for conversations you want to keep
  • Keep Gemini Apps Activity enabled
  • Document device-account mappings so you don’t lose conversations to the wrong surface
