Your company uses Workspace and Gmail / Docs / Sheets should show a Gemini side panel / “Help me write” — but yours is empty. Not a bug: Workspace’s Gemini integration has three switches, all required: domain-level (Admin Console service status), user-level (Gemini license SKU assignment), application-level (app version + cache refresh). None of the three exposes errors to the others, so triage commonly stalls at layer 2.
To unblock the panel, open the three switches in order: domain → license → app.
Common causes
By frequency:
1. Admin hasn’t enabled Gemini for Workspace add-on (most common)
Workspace doesn’t include Gemini by default; admin must buy + enable Gemini Business / Enterprise SKU.
How to judge:
- No one in your org has the panel = this
- Confirm with IT: did the org purchase Gemini for Workspace?
2. Domain enabled, but your account isn’t assigned a license
Admin may have assigned licenses to specific users (cost control). Domain ON, user OFF.
How to judge: coworker A has the panel, coworker B doesn’t — you’re in B.
3. Wrong SKU type
Gemini for Workspace SKUs:
- Gemini Business ($20/user/month): Docs / Gmail / Slides / Meet basic integration
- Gemini Enterprise ($30/user/month): above + Vault + security
- AI Meetings & Messaging ($10/user/month): Meet / Chat only
Your need vs your SKU may not match.
How to judge: which SKU did IT assign you?
4. App version too old
Old Docs / Gmail clients don’t render the Gemini panel.
How to judge:
- Web: hard refresh — should appear if license is OK
- Mobile: Play Store / App Store update + restart
5. Browser cache
After domain enable, browser needs a refresh to render new UI.
How to judge: clear cache + re-login = immediate.
6. Region not rolled out
Some regions (EU GDPR areas / China / Russia) don’t have full Gemini for Workspace rollout.
How to judge: IT confirms region coverage.
7. Edge Workspace editions (Education / Nonprofit)
Education / Nonprofit Workspace SKUs differ from Business / Enterprise; some features are restricted.
Shortest path to fix
Step 1: IT checks domain-level service status
Admin in Admin Console:
admin.google.com → Apps → Google Workspace → Gemini
Service status: "ON for everyone" or "ON for some organizational units"?
If OFF, turn fully ON:
Service status → ON for everyone → SAVE
Wait ~30 min to propagate
Step 2: IT checks / assigns license SKU
Admin Console → Billing → Subscriptions
Find "Gemini Business" / "Gemini Enterprise" → license count
Users → find you → "Licenses" tab
Confirm a Gemini license is assigned to you
Out of licenses → IT purchases more or reassigns.
Step 3: You — refresh the app
After domain + license are confirmed:
1. Quit all Workspace apps (Gmail / Docs / Sheets)
2. accounts.google.com → sign out of all accounts
3. Clear browser cookies + cache (google.com family only)
4. Sign back into Workspace account
5. Open docs.google.com — check the side panel
Mobile apps:
Play Store / App Store → update Docs / Gmail / Sheets
Restart the app
Step 4: Test across apps
If only Docs lacks the panel but Gemini.google.com works → integration issue If Gemini.google.com is also broken → domain / license issue
Step 5: Test different devices / browsers
Chrome → Safari / Firefox
Work laptop → personal device
Broken everywhere = account issue (license / domain)
Broken on one device = browser / cache issue
Step 6: Region — test via VPN
Connect US VPN
Sign into Workspace
Check Docs side panel
Works via VPN = regional gating; ask IT about geo waivers or per-region availability.
Step 7: Contact Google Workspace Support
If IT confirms domain + license but you still can’t see it:
- IT opens a ticket: Admin Console → Help → Contact Support
- Provide: account email, SKU type, screenshots, timestamps
- Google typically responds in 24-48 hours
Prevention
- Add Gemini license SKU assignment to your onboarding checklist
- After admin toggles service status, tell users to re-login — otherwise panel stays hidden
- Document which SKU (Business / Enterprise) the org uses so new hires aren’t confused
- Mobile apps auto-update — old versions skip the panel
- For region-sensitive customer issues, VPN-test once to confirm regional rollout
